What is that secret to success?  The masters of the ages, present day gurus and self-help aficionados have been working that question for centuries.  Does Peggy McColl really have the answer in her book The Won Thing?

On one hand, the answer is pure and simple.  On the other, you may have a number of assignments to complete before you get there.  I know I’ve been working on these for most of my life — I look at it as reprogramming my mind, resurrecting it from the PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) I acquired as an abused youth.  We all have some level of reprogramming to do, and Peggy leads off her list with finding the balance between not expecting someone to rescue us, and being open to support.   There are six more balancing acts in Peggy’s winning formula.  Nothing new on this list, just smart to see it assembled here.  Manage your thoughts and emotions, be goal-oriented, give to others, feel grateful for what you’ve got,  tend to details, and the seventh is to be happy.

I won’t give away her “won thing,” but I will say that it is highly individual.  Peggy tells lots of stories here, each one taking you into her point.

As the judgmental voices become more faint and fall away, because I’m not listening, the spiritual voice is stronger and sweeter.  Life is so much fun now.

I’ll give you an example.  Every morning I journal in a legal pad, tucked inside the zippered leather binder I’ve been carrying for nine years.  Maybe a legal pad lasts a month.  I don’t know.  I store the finished ones in a box in my linen closet.  On the first page of every legal pad, I write a densely-worded litany of what I want in present tense, which I update with each new journal.  I see those goals every morning when I open the leather notebook.  Some seemed crazy when I first wrote them down, and I could hear that voice inside go “yeah right,” but I’ve been noticing that gradually the voice is silent, and these goals, these dreams are sweetly, easily coming true.  I don’t worry this list — I surrendered it a long time ago.    This week, two big ones came true — get debt-free and get a great new agent.  I learned of a loan that would consolidate my debt, which I can much more easily pay off — and they approved it!  And I followed up with an agent who has had my memoir for about a month — and he said Yes!

I was at a birthday party tonight for a dear friend, author Jennie Shortridge.  There were a lot of writers present, and I took away vital knowledge about mind-set from one of them.  What I want is for my book to be published by a great publisher.  This author said — before her books were sold for six-figures — that she wanted them to find the perfect readers for those books.  They did.  As for the money, she had a figure in her mind, actually asking for that figure.  And, knowing that she was worth it, she got it.  Now, there are a lot of factors at stake — primarily, a transitioning publishing industry and media.  She wasn’t buying the negative view.  Some authors are selling their works.  She could be one of them.

As we parted, she smiled and told me to remember her story.  Your dreams can — and will — come true.
