The Truth About Psychics: What’s Real, What’s Not, and How to Tell the Difference
By Sylvia Browne
Published December 1st, 2009 (Hardcover) Fireside
I interviewed Sylvia Browne this morning about her book The Truth About Psychics. The show is on tape, and we’ll air it in a few weeks on Open Book with Diana Page Jordan, but I’ll give you a few highlights while they’re fresh on my mind.
Sylvia is not shy about her age. She’s 73, and she’s been doing psychic readings for nearly 55-years. She’s written more than fifty books. Those are the stats.
Oh, one more. She has an 87% accuracy rate.
First of all, Sylvia wrote the book, she says, because she got angry hearing that people had gone to so-called psychics and had curses put on them, or they handed over huge amounts of money, or were put through a fishing expedition. By that last, she means questions to an audience, like “does anyone have an alcoholic in the family?” or what she calls the A-B-C-D method, “does his name begin with A…with B…with C…?” These are all no-no’s, including Ouija boards, which, she says, is like hearing a knock on your front door, and just saying “come in!” without asking who it is or vetting them in any way.
She says she would have quit this psychic business a long time ago if people didn’t keep thanking her for saving their lives. Oh, and that ex-husband bit I mentioned in yesterday’s blog — that she’s not psychic about herself and has the ex-husbands to prove it — she just got happily re-married, and she says we are just too close to ourselves, too emotionally-involved to read ourselves.
All that said, let’s look at predictions. Sylvia says by mid-2010, we should be doing well economically. She says President Obama inherited “a big hole in the ground,” but the US is coming out of the economic downturn nicely now, and by the middle of next year, we’ll feel good. A lot of mom-and-pop’s will be springing up. Aside here from Diana – I’ve been saying that for the past six-months. To Sylvia, I say, it’s because so many were laid off, we’re forced to be entrepreneurs. She agrees.
I asked her about the war, and Sylvia says it’ll never end, because of the way life is over there. The US, she says, will just pull out, but it will be in at least a year.
I poked around for more specifics, and she nails some for me. She tells me I’m addicted to carbs, and I’ve got to cut it out, and eat more protein. Jeez, was she talking to my doctor? She also says she sees me writing a book. Sylvia scores another bulls-eye. I wrote a memoir which is with my agent, and will be looking for a publisher. Next year, Sylvia says, mid-year, I’ll have a publisher.
“How about my love-life,” I ask.
No great guy for another year-and-a-half. “Now if you want a frog…” she tempts me…
“Uh, no, I’ll wait,” I say.
Sylvia Browne has a lot more to say. I’ll let you know when the show posts.

I just love Sylvia Browne and mention her from time to time on my blog. I really miss watching her on The Montel Williams show! And I read the review of the new book on yesterday’s post and now will definitely have to check it out. Glad I found your blog today. I will have to learn more about you!

Hi, Leslee,
Thanks for the lovely note. I’ve interviewed Sylvia about five times now, and she’s always a hoot! She mentioned Montel, and it sounds like she’s continuing to be on his show. She usually shows up in the beginning of the year on Montel’s show with 2010 predictions.
As for learning more about me – ask away! I do have a lot on my website, and I’d love to be friends on Facebook. You can also follow me on Twitter, and I’ll follow you back. Thanks!
All the best,
Diana

The Montel Williams Show went off the air in 2008. Odd that she failed to mention that during your 2009 interview with her.

Hi Johnny,
Thank you for reading my blog.
I’m guessing, but I’d say the memories were still fresh for Sylvia – maybe that’s why she didn’t mention Montel going off the air.
Sylvia has a new book out almost every year, and I’ve interviewed her at least a half-dozen times. I imagine I’ll have the chance to interview her yet again.
Take care,
Diana
