After three days of self-torment - finally making sense of my lifetime of domestic violence and sex abuse, in concert with the Law of Attraction – (side note) I’m free!!! I got it!!! Um, I decided to go easy on myself and read a book about the way we love. Yeah, real simple. It’s called Elemental Love Styles, and if you’re looking for a comparison of sorts, think astrology.
That’s not why Dr. Craig Martin created the book – he said he wanted to fall in love with someone with whom he was truly compatible, and he kept choosing guys with the same pattern as the one before. It’s a fun book. There’s a quiz to figure out which of the four types you are. And, much like astrology – there are fire, water, air and earth signs. I’m a Leo, so I figured I’d be Fire all the way.
Yes and no.
Of the 44-questions, I scored fifteen Fire and fifteen Water. Fire, he describes as Big Personality, while Water is Big Feelings. True enough. He says what’s cool is that as soon as you know you’re a mix – and I’ve got 8 in Air and 5 in Earth – you are a lot more forgiving of yourself for acting out of your main type. Because now you know you are legitimately several types.
It’s funny, because Fire, if you’re female, is archetypal Woman Woman. As in Diana Prince. That’s felt right for forever. But then, Water? That’s Cinderella, which is my life story – without the handsome prince. Which is the point of reading this book. Not that I believe in Prince Charming sweeping me off my feet, but I do believe life gets better and better. Air is Alice in Wonderland, and Earth is Mary Richards. Frankly I can – and have – claimed all of them.
Probably the best take-away of the book, is the mini-conversations the types have with each other – all learning experiences, so that whether we’re fire, water, air or earth, we dig deeper to get along.
And, that’s always a winning match.
