Toxins crawl out of my body. Mad carpenter ants. Only this time, there is no husband to pack his wet tobacco onto the bite marks to suck the venom. And the itch! This time, the itching springs up. To the top of my head. My palms. The soles of my feet. A parade itching for change.

All I can do is roll with it – and listen to Marianne Williamson tell me it is a classic toxic response – and oh so very good, though admittedly painful. Poisons must come out they way they went in, she tells me on Open Book with Diana Page Jordan. Read the rest of this entry »

If you have a five-year old, you know how pivotal that year is.  A bridge between fantasy and reality, between playing with anything and going to school where you play with what you are given, between trusting just nearby adults and trusting an expanding world.  Trust. What is really real.

Five is a touch-point.  You remember being five in your own life.  What happened then may have altered your direction in life.  It did for me.  It did for Jack, in this bestselling novel by Emma Donoghue.    Read the rest of this entry »

Angels abound!  If you’re reading this, the odds are extremely high that you, too, believe in angels.  Most of us do.  I’ve seen angels most of my life.  After a couple of years in the same writing group where I worked on my memoir, New York Times bestselling author Chelsea Cain signed one of her books to me: For Diana, who (almost) makes me believe in angels.

There are angels, but there is no hell.  Nick Bunick told me in an interview recorded a few days ago Read the rest of this entry »

It is Time for Truth.  This sense – mandate, almost – seems to be flying from all directions.  And, Nick Bunick’s book may be a harbinger.

You may remember Nick Bunick from his best-selling book The Messengers.  In it, he revealed that he was Paul, Jeshua’s friend.  I interviewed Nick about that book.  I remember reading The Messengers, and as I closed the book, which was stuffed with references of the number 444, indicating angelic presence, I looked up and saw the clock – precisely 4:44.  I ended up being interviewed by USA Today about Nick.   I’ll have a chance tomorrow to interview Nick about Time for Truth.   Read the rest of this entry »

If I Stay – A Lovely YA Book for Anyone Who Wonders

If I Stay

I remember the news story on which this novel, If I Stay, was based.  Or at least one very like it.

I have reported on dozens of tragedies during my years as a broadcast journalist.  And, when a cop’s voice quivers during a phone interview as he speaks from the scene.  Or when – in the early days – I could actually report from the scene, and I walked away with the story in my head, and an ache imprinted in my heart. Or when I heard on the scanner snippets of a young person waving a gun at police, and the anguish that followed.  The story stays. Read the rest of this entry »

Of Your Purpose in the Universe…and the Exorcist

Extraordinarily entertaining and provoking.  William Peter Blatty. I listened back to the interview, and the second time is richer – much like reading Blatty’s books, The Exorcist and Dimiter.  Blatty reinforced my faith and made me laugh.  More on that in a moment.  But first… Read the rest of this entry »

Making the Shift with Wayne Dyer

The Shift: Taking Your Life From Ambition to Meaning

By Dr Wayne W. Dyer

Wayne sent me his movie to watch – and I will – but I always read the book first.  The Shift gently reminds me of who I am, who we all are, really.  Dr Wayne Dyer takes us from the stage of being nothing and everything, an aspect of Oneness…to the Ego, of Edging God Out..to finding the true Meaning of Life. He calls up the scriptures, the beloved words from every culture, poets and philosophers.   He reminds us that when we are ready, we will see who our teachers are, and we will open to them.

The Shift arrived a few days ago, but today, it was the only book I wanted to read.  Read the rest of this entry »

Opening the mail today – a pile of close to two dozen packages and envelopes – I selected the next package on top, slid a book out, and smiled with astonishment.  The book is out!  A Cup of Comfort for Fathers tumbled to the dark wood table, where my real dad had once, so very long ago, set his cup of coffee.  The table had been in my grandparent’s Upper West Side apartment in New York, and now it is forever in my home.

The story I’d written for A Cup of Comfort for Fathers was set in that very apartment.  I was two years old at the time.  This story is not your typical father-daughter story, Read the rest of this entry »

Secrets of Eden – Disturbingly Good Writing

Eight hours later, I am just now catching my breath.

I read Secrets of Eden, falling into the disturbing brilliant story about domestic abuse.  And then, this afternoon, Chris Bohjalian and I met at the Heathman Hotel in Portland, OR, for one of our many interviews.  I once interviewed Chris in San Diego – in a car – at the airport – having passed through security – twice – in this 9/11 time – forever impressing the hell out of him.  He reminded me of that today, when we settled against the relatively plush couch pillows in his suite. This time – he would not know until after I had put away the mic – that it was just after I had rummaged through similar material from my own life. Read the rest of this entry »

Mike Dooley’s Infinite Possibilities

The first voice I heard this morning – sandwiched in between dreams somewhere in the six o’clock hour  – was Mike Dooley’s.  In the first seconds, before my consciousness prodded me to speak my professional greeting, I thought, what a lovely way to wake up.

Mike was calling to give me a different phone number for our conversation on Open Book with Diana Page Jordan some seven hours later.  He apologized for the early hour, but he needn’t have.  Guileless at that time of day, I absorbed his energy, and it felt good.

On the show – and in the book, Infinite Possibilities – Mike has a common-man way about him. He’s a tax accountant turned T-shirt entrepreneur turned author/speaker. He’s not stuffed full of himself.  His openness helps in understanding our own paths.

Like me, I often worry that I’ve doomed myself Read the rest of this entry »
