Taking Time To Live

A gorgeous finish to a beautiful day at the Oregon CoastFunny thing about taking time to live.  More stuff gets done.  It’s like pulling your feet off the brakes, and putting them on your handlebars, like you did when you were a kid. And just rolling with it.

And, that process allows for magic.  Hey, I’m a journalist, and I observe magic all the time.

I’m at the Oregon Coast.  I can’t tell you the last time I broke away from my long list of to-do’s, and my sense of lacking money.  Probably three weeks ago, I printed up my 375-page manuscript, pulled out a brand-new red pen to edit the crap out of it, and there it sat.  Chelsea Cain, in Workshop, commented that I should just go somewhere where I’d never been, and bring the thing – not try to edit it at home, amid the dings, pings, and stacks of post-it notes with ideas, details, and things-I-must-do-now.

So, I put it out there.  Much like a dandelion wish, where you blow, and it’s carried away.

I also, many months ago, wished for an all-expense paid trip to a sunny place, knowing that that would probably have to be a plane trip somewhere.

Well, guess what.  4am Friday morning, I’m on a list of people who gets an email from a friend who happens to have trade at a wonderful hotel on the Oregon coast.  Lodging free, and more than enough script to cover my non-alcoholic, sweet-loving ways.  She can’t use it.  Use it or lose it, she wrote – who wants it?  I put in.  I got it.

I brought a small bag of clothes; my manuscript; and I remembered when I arrived, after a beautiful sunny drive, that if somehow I needed a bathing suit, I always carry one in my purse.  Hey, you never know!

I stayed in flow.  Didn’t fight the river.  Didn’t set any alarm.  Smiled a lot.  Laughed even more.  Said thank you thank you thank you all day long.  Because today was bikini weather!  Very warm and sunny, and I sat out on the deck overlooking the ocean, editing my manuscript all day long.  Except for a couple of long walks at the ocean’s edge, in bare feet.  Heaven.  I finished the edits.  My skin is sun-kissed.  And, those post-it notes didn’t nag me one bit.  Relaxing into one of the few sunny days I’ve ever experienced at the coast, it occurred to me that when you put those desires out there, and you don’t worry them, you just let them float aloft like a helium balloon, they get answered so creatively, you could never have imagined it this way.

Stunningly delightful.  I love living.  And, no, I’m not posting the picture of me in my bikini, editing out on the deck.  I ate oysters, burgers, scallops, french fries, creme brulee – too much!

My Friend NYT Bestselling Author Brad Meltzer with a Stellar Message for Ordinary People

The Inner Circle

We go back a long way.  Fourteen years.  In those days, I interviewed authors for a daily book show Between the Lines for AP Radio Network, and, honestly, I preferred in-studio interviews to phoners.  In a sense, I took a chance on interviewing Brad Meltzer over the phone about his first book, Tenth Justice. And, every time we do an interview, Brad reminds me that I was there with him since the beginning.

In a way, Brad’s comment is a microcosm for the beautiful thread that runs through all his books, including his newest The Inner Circle.   In an interview with Brad, that will air on Open Book with Diana Page Jordan tomorrow/Tuesday, and I’ll post it here later, he made a fascinating comment. Toxins crawl out of my body. Mad carpenter ants. Only this time, there is no husband to pack his wet tobacco onto the bite marks to suck the venom. And the itch! This time, the itching springs up. To the top of my head. My palms. The soles of my feet. A parade itching for change.

All I can do is roll with it – and listen to Marianne Williamson tell me it is a classic toxic response – and oh so very good, though admittedly painful. Poisons must come out they way they went in, she tells me on Open Book with Diana Page Jordan. Read the rest of this entry »

Of the dozens of Law of Attraction books I’ve read over my twenty-plus years of interviewing authors, Inspired Destiny is one of the best. Dr. John Demartini doesn’t lecture down from a mount.  He draws from his own difficult beginnings:  A dyslexic kid whom teachers told had no chance of succeeding in the world.  As a teen, he ran off to be a surfer.  The author of dozens of books, he was featured in the film phenom, The Secret.

Magical Self-Healing – Part Two

Inna Segal’s show aired today on Open Book with Diana Page Jordan.  You can listen to the half-hour show, here, and I also promised in my blog yesterday to give you a few more of the highlights.

Inna’s book is The Secret Language of Your Body.  It is assembled much like a dream dictionary.  Look up your ailing organ, or use color as preventative medicine.  Look up your emotions or your body systems.  It’s cool.  The book’s biggest take-away is that your body is talking to you.  Using Inna’s book, you can interpret its changes, and act accordingly.  The other take-away is that Inna’s life has gotten phenomenally better.  Doors fly open.  She says these words to Universal Intelligence or Divine Intelligence, “How does it get better?”  Then she focuses on her intention. The oddest thing happened during intermission at the Michael Beckwith/Bob Thurman event a few weeks ago.  A petite brown-haired woman walked down the aisle toward my seat, and I rose, as if beckoned, to speak with her.  We didn’t know each other.  We had never met before.  But it seemed like we were supposed to speak.  So, we did.  We parted a few moments later, a bit puzzled.  Later in the evening, I was chatting with an event organizer from Beyond Words, and mentioned that I’d be interviewing one of their authors soon – Inna Segal.  The co-founder of the publishing company pointed a few rows away, and said, “There’s Inna.”  Inna was the very same petite brown-haired woman.  After our interview a few days ago, we still have that sense of something more – yet to be discovered.

One thing for certain, Inna Segal has come a long way – as she mentions briefly in her book The Secret Language of Your Body, and, at length, on my show – Open Book with Diana Page Jordan – which will air tomorrow at 1:30p Pacific on www.pdx.fm.  Inna – pronounced EE-nah – was barely out of her teens when her body felt ravaged with pain, particularly her back.  She visited doctors and chiropractors, none able to diagnose and heal her.  Finally, nearly bent in pain, she visited a chiropractor who frankly told her to go home.  She was shocked and angry.  He simply told her that her body was stuck, and there was nothing he could do to help her.  Inna said she was so furious, she hardly felt the pain as she returned home.  But it stirred her to action.  Read the rest of this entry »

As Susan Casey walked up the railroad ties that are the steps leading up the steep climb to my home studio, she smiled and said, “I remember you. You interviewed me for my book The Devil’s Teeth.”

Yes.
That was five years ago. In a closet-sized studio at one of my radio stations.

Casey is now the editor-in-chief of O Magazine, and she literally immersed herself in the research for her newest book, The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks and Giants of the Ocean.  Susan Casey is drawn to the ocean as if she were born there, and compels herself to return.  She took me on quite a journey during our interview, which you can hear here. Nearly always I share reviews and interviews with you about the newest books on the market.  But sometimes books just show up, and they’re not necessarily new, maybe they’re even ancient.

Like Bob Burg’s three-year old book The Go-Giver. It’s a sweet little parable with five resounding lessons.  A newer book just hit – Go-Givers Sell More - driving home those key points.

Inspirational Words from a Transformative Event

Bookmark and Share

The haunting sweetness of Nawang Khechog’s flute filled the Trinity Cathedral in NW Portland Friday night – he has opened for the Dalai Lama, and this night, he was opening for Michael Beckwith and Robert Thurman.  When I walked in, finding  pew near the front, I felt calm.  A love bath.  Even more so, when Beckwith walked onto the stage.  His energy danced with merriment, and I smiled even more broadly just at his presence.

I’ve interviewed Thurman before – He’s fun!  And, he’s Uma’s father, you know.  But I haven’t interviewed Beckwith.  Yet ;-)

The evening danced with the words of two sharply intelligent men and the laughter they created.  Read the rest of this entry »
